Researchers at Harvard have developed a new carbon-based battery chemistry claimed to hold twice the electric charge of advanced metal-based batteries of comparable mass.

The quinone molecule thus has the potential to slash the cost of storing intermittent renewable power, relative to the cost of nickel-metal hydride and lithium-ion batteries.

The research was supported by the DOE’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA- E), which makes competitive grants to support technologies with high risk and high potential reward.
