This rate is calculated by the estimated amount of power your panels will generate over its lifetime. With solar PPAs, your solar bills are based on the actual electricity generated by your solar system, so your solar bill can vary month to month. Solar panels work with backup generator? Do solar panels and generators work together? Here’s the deal – even if you have a standby generator hooked up to your home, your solar panels aren’t going to turn on when the grid is down. Unfortunately, you cannot run your home with both solar power and generator power at the same time. In other words, the generator and the solar panels cannot operate parallel to one another. Like we said earlier, solar panels send feedback to the grid, creating a dangerous scenario for utility repair workers. Similarly, if the panels remained on, they would send feedback to the generator and thereby cause damage to the generator, the solar system, or both. Plus, the energy generators produce isn’t powerful enough to boot up most solar inverters anyway. This doesn’t mean you can’t have a standby generator if you have solar, or that you can’t get solar if you already have a standby generator installed. There are many homes that have both solar panels and generators, especially when it comes to off-grid systems. The panels and generator just need to be wired properly so that the two won’t interfere with one another. Your solar installer or a certified electrician will be able to help you figure out the best (and safest) way to do this. How solar panels work in space You can’t collect solar power at night. Well, at least not on Earth. Since it’s Space Week, we thought it’d be appropriate to look at one promising, but futuristic, idea that could change the face of solar power generation: Space-Based Solar Power (SBSP). While the Energy Department is not actively researching SBSP, we hope you’ll take a moment to learn about this far out concept. The idea of capturing solar power in space for use as energy on Earth has been around since the beginning of the space age. In the last few years, however, scientists around the globe – and several researchers at the Energy Department’s own Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) – have shown how recent technological developments could make this concept a reality. On earth, solar power is greatly reduced by night, cloud cover, atmosphere and seasonality. Some 30 percent of all incoming solar radiation never makes it to ground level. In space the sun is always shining, the tilt of the Earth doesn’t prevent the collection of power and there’s no atmosphere to reduce the intensity of the sun’s rays. This makes putting solar panels into space a tempting possibility. Additionally, SBSP can be used to get reliable and clean energy to people in remote communities around the world, without relying on the traditional grid to a large local power plant. How does it work? Self-assembling satellites are launched into space, along with reflectors and a microwave or laser power transmitter. Reflectors or inflatable mirrors spread over a vast swath of space, directing solar radiation onto solar panels. These panels convert solar power into either a microwave or a laser, and beam uninterrupted power down to Earth. On Earth, power-receiving stations collect the beam and add it to the electric grid. The two most commonly discussed designs for SBSP are a large, deeper space microwave transmitting satellite and a smaller, nearer laser transmitting satellite. Microwave Transmitting Satellites Microwave transmitting satellites orbit Earth in geostationary orbit (GEO), about 35,000 km above Earth’s surface. Designs for microwave transmitting satellites are massive, with solar reflectors spanning up to 3 km and weighing over 80,000 metric tons. They would be capable of generating multiple gigawatts of power, enough to power a major U.S. city. The long wavelength of the microwave requires a long antenna, and allows power to be beamed through the Earth’s atmosphere, rain or shine, at safe, low intensity levels hardly stronger than the midday sun. Birds and planes wouldn’t notice much of anything flying across their paths. The estimated cost of launching, assembling and operating a microwave-equipped GEO satellite is in the tens of billions of dollars. It would likely require as many as 40 launches for all necessary materials to reach space. On Earth, the rectenna used for collecting the microwave beam would be anywhere between 3 and 10 km in diameter, a huge area of land, and a challenge to purchase and develop. Laser Transmitting Satellites Laser transmitting satellites, as described by our friends at LLNL, orbit in low Earth orbit (LEO) at about 400 km above the Earth’s surface. Weighing in in at less than 10 metric tons, this satellite is a fraction of the weight of its microwave counterpart. This design is cheaper too; some predict that a laser-equipped SBSP satellite would cost nearly $500 million to launch and operate. It would be possible to launch the entire self-assembling satellite in a single rocket, drastically reducing the cost and time to production. Also, by using a laser transmitter, the beam will only be about 2 meters in diameter, instead of several km, a drastic and important reduction. To make this possible, the satellite’s solar power beaming system employs a diode-pumped alkali laser. First demonstrated at LLNL in 2002 – and currently still under development there – this laser would be about the size of a kitchen table, and powerful enough to beam power to Earth at an extremely high efficiency, over 50 percent. While this satellite is far lighter, cheaper and easier to deploy than its microwave counterpart, serious challenges remain. The idea of high-powered lasers in space could draw on fears of the militarization of space. This challenge could be remedied by limiting the direction that which the laser system could transmit its power. At its smaller size, there is a correspondingly lower capacity of about 1 to 10 megawatts per satellite. Therefore, this satellite would be best as part of a fleet of similar satellites, used together. You could say SBSP is a long way off or pie in the sky (puns intended) – and you’d largely correct. But many technologies already exist to make this feasible, and many aren’t far behind. While the Energy Department isn’t currently developing any SBSP technologies specifically, many of the remaining technologies needed for SBSP could be developed independently in the years to come. And while we don’t know the future of power harvested from space, we are excited to see ideas like this take flight (okay last pun, I promise). How do I know if my solar panel is working? Are your solar panels working? Six simple steps to find out if all is well with your solar PV system. Many solar owners have little idea if the solar system on their roof is working properly. We surveyed more than 1000 solar owners and found that 33% had experienced problems with their system. Overall, 11% reported that their system was producing less energy than the installer told them it would and 21% had no idea if it was performing properly or not! Solar PV systems can chug away quietly for years without an issue, but the figures above show it’s not unusual for an unknown problem to cost you money. If you’re not sure how well your solar panels are working, take our six simple steps to do a quick health check of your system. • Step 1: Don’t rely on your electricity bill • Step 2: Look up – is there shading or are the panels dirty? • Step 3: Look at the inverter – is there a red or green light? • Step 4: View your system’s data • Step 5: How do you know if your solar is producing as much energy as it should? • Step 6: Best idea! Install a third-party solar monitor Common factors that will reduce your solar power output Step 1: Don’t rely on your electricity bill We found 46% of solar owners use their bill to see if there’s a problem – but this is unreliable. Looking at the amount of money you received for your exported solar doesn’t give a good idea of the performance of your investment. Your bill doesn’t show how much energy was produced by the PV system in total, or how much of that was used in the house – it only shows the amount of solar energy exported to the grid, and the amount of electricity you’ve drawn from the grid. If something goes wrong with your system and the output is reduced or the inverter has an error and stops working, the grid quietly steps in to provide the power instead. Many of us only receive electricity bills every three months. That’s a long time for a system to be on the blink and losing you money. In addition, the output of solar systems change with the seasons as the hours of available sunshine lengthen or shorten. And with a change in the seasons, our household usage patterns also change. Step 2: Look up – is there shading or are the panels dirty? Stand back and look at your solar panels. Are they shiny or dull and dirty? Do they have tree sap, vines, or bird droppings on them? Is there evidence of delamination or plastic peeling? Dirt isn’t usually a problem when there’s regular rainfall to wash the panels, so cleaning isn’t often necessary. However, a build-up of tree sap, dust and bird droppings during a long dry period can reduce the output of the panels. Consider giving your panels a hose from the ground if it hasn’t rained in a while. If the dirt won’t budge, hire a contractor with the right safety equipment to clean them for you. (Please note: We do not recommend going up a ladder or on the roof to clean your panels. Approximately 5000 people per year are admitted to Australian hospitals from serious ladder-related injuries.) Shade is your solar system’s enemy. Is there more shade now than when your solar panels were installed? A tree may have grown, or an antenna, roof ventilator or a new structure may be shading it for part of the day. Where panels are string mounted or connected together, what affects one panel will affect the output of them all. That means if shade falls on one panel, it will reduce the output of all the panels in that ‘string’. If you paid extra to have your panels ‘optimised’ then the shading issue is confined to the affected panel only. Step 3: Look at the inverter – is there a red or green light? Many solar owners never go near their inverter, but CHOICE found that 20% of surveyed solar owners had experienced problems with it. How would you know if there’s a problem? A simple health check is to look at the colour of the lights shining on the box during daylight hours when the system’s meant to be running. A green light on your inverter means your system is functioning properly. A red or orange light during daylight hours means there’s a system event or fault. In the event of a red or orange flashing flight, look for an error code on the display. Alternatively, you may be able to go to the inverter’s user interface via a web portal for an indication of the cause. Finn Peacock from Solar Quotes says, “If there’s an error message, call the installer.” Inverters can shut down due to a grid fault where the voltage is too high or too low, or there may be a problem with the earthing of the system. Another reason might be that the circuit breaker for the inverter has tripped. More specifically, in the case of newer SMA brand inverters, a green light on the outside of the inverter means there is above 90% output (which is perfect). Below 90% and the light pulses. Older generation SMA brand inverters may not have an online interface and may use a yellow light instead of a red one to indicate a fault. Step 4: View your system’s data There are two ways to access the information about a modern solar PV system’s output from the inverter – on the digital screen if it has one, and through an online account connected to your inverter. The online data and graphs are more detailed and easier to understand and compare with your systems’ expected performance. They may give you monthly and annual kWh output. What do those numbers on the inverter’s screen mean? The data on the inverter’s screen isn’t as useful, but it should be able to give you three figures: The amount of kilowatts of power being supplied to your house and/or the grid at that point in time (in kW). The amount of kilowatt hours of energy it’s produced so far that day (kWh). You should check this when the sun goes down. The amount of kilowatt hours of energy it’s produced in total since it was installed (kWh). TIP: Power or energy? Power is measured in watts (W) or kilowatts (kW). Energy is measured in kilowatt hours (kWh). If your solar panels continuously output 5kW of power for a whole 60 minutes, you will have produced 5kWh of energy. Accessing your solar output data online Most good quality inverters offer easy-to-read graphs and data about your system’s daily, monthly and annual energy production by logging into an app or web portal. However, it won’t tell you about you energy consumption on site. We found that 32% of people track the performance of their system using the online interface for the inverter. If you haven’t already, do an online search for the inverter manufacturer and set up your account and login. Below is the output reading from a household system in Randwick, Sydney, taken from SMA’s Sunny Portal site. (SMA lets you choose whether or not to make your data public.) Step 5: How do you know if your solar is producing as much energy as it should? When your system was installed, you should have been given an owner’s manual by the retailer or installer with an estimated prediction of your solar system’s production for each month of the year. It may be expressed as average daily kilowatt hours (kWh) per month, or the monthly yield. Check the estimated amounts in the owner’s manual with the actual output revealed on your inverter’s account via the app or web interface (these figures aren’t usually available on the inverter’s screen). Or, even better, check it using a third-party monitoring system. Your system will never run at 100% efficiency If you have 5kW of panels, the maximum output they can generate is 5kW over one hour. But they’ll never be 100% efficient. Losses can occur with the inverter and the cabling, and performance of panels is affected by climate conditions, season, and the angle and direction of the panels. A well-designed and installed system minimizes these losses. Peacock says most solar systems in Australian conditions will peak at 80% of their specified peak power – but that’s at midday in summer. For the energy nerds among us, you can get an estimate of your system’s expected output using this PV Watts calculator which uses BOM weather data. Step 6: Best idea! Install a third-party solar monitor To stay on top of your PV system’s health and make the best use of your solar power to save money, we recommend investing a few hundred dollars in a third-party solar monitoring system. Unlike the data that comes from your inverter, these can detect when the output is poor or nil, and alert you with an email or SMS within a couple of days. Good quality third-party monitoring will know the correct performance to be expected from your panels and, using local weather data, will alert you if it drops below the minimum guaranteed in your 25 year warranty. And when you call the installer to fix it, they’ll take your concerns seriously if they know you’ve got a third-party monitoring system guiding you. Nigel Morris from Solar Analytics says, “Not having monitoring on your solar PV system is like driving a car without a dashboard.” “It simply gives you a 0-100% figure for your system health,” adds Peacock. “A friend started getting emails from their Solar Analytics system telling them to look at their system urgently. “She got the installer round (he was happy to go round because he knew it was unlikely to be a false alarm thanks to the monitoring) and found a melted connector that could have been a fire risk!” Monitoring also allows you to track your energy usage in the home and measure high-usage circuits and appliances to: Reduce their use or upgrade them to more efficient models Shift their use to daytime solar production periods. Common factors that will reduce your solar power output • Heat High temperatures reduce the efficiency of solar panels. Peacock says a system can lose about 10% of rated power on a 25 degree day, and more if it’s hotter. A breeze cooling them down will improve it. • Solar panel orientation and tilting Panels facing due north will generate more than those facing east or west, and they should be optimally tilted. A well-designed and installed system will minimise these losses. • System losses Cabling loses about 2% of power while the inverter can lose 3-4% of power in the conversion from DC to AC power. • Clouds, haze Output drops with reduced solar radiation. • Dirt, shading Tree sap, bird droppings, shade, dust and grime can reduce output. • Season It goes without saying that there’ll be more production in summer with more available sunshine hours and less in winter. • Time of day When you measure the solar power (kW output of your system) makes a difference. Midday is when it’s highest. Do solar panels work on campers? RV Solar Panels: A Guide For Beginners Solar panels atop RVs are all the rage. Everybody’s installing them. But what are RV solar panels? How do they work, what can they do for you, and are they worth the investment? Let’s find out! What Are RV Solar Panels? In the 1800s, scientists observed something called the photovoltaic effect, where some materials would produce an electric charge and current when exposed to sunlight. Attempts were made over the years to create “solar engines,” as they called them, but most had very low efficiencies. It wasn’t until the 1950’s that scientists discovered that silicon (found in sand) could create a much more efficient solar panel. This initial discovery led to the development of solar cells that could harness the sun’s energy and turn it into electricity. The technology has evolved over the years, but the concept remains the same. A solar panel is a panel filled with solar cells that capture the sun’s energy and turn that energy into usable electricity that powers homes, businesses, coffee pots, and, yes – your RV! Let’s find out how it all works! Solar Engine 1935 This photo from 1935 shows an early “Solar Engine”. While nothing like the simple panels of today, attempts to harness solar energy have been ongoing for over 100 years. How Do RV Solar Panels Work? Let’s imagine you have a couple of solar panels on the roof of your RV. If your RV is on the road or parked during the day, sunlight hits your solar panels, and cells on the panels absorb energy from the sun. Within your solar panels’ cells, circuits take the energy absorbed by the sun’s cells and turn it into electrical current. The electrical current is fed through wires to a charge controller that controls the battery’s current. RV solar panels diagram This energy becomes DC (direct current) electricity that charges your RV’s house battery or batteries, essentially “storing” energy to be used to power devices and appliances in your RV or charge devices for your later use. This DC power from the solar panels and batteries is typically 12 volts. This DC power runs lights, appliances, and electronics in the RV. However, you can also take that 12-Volt DC, pass it through an inverter, and convert it to 120-Volt AC (alternating current) electricity (like the outlets found in a sticks-and-bricks house) to power 120-Volt devices such as a coffee pot. There are 120-Volt outlets scattered throughout your RV, but those don’t have power unless you’re using a generator or your RV is plugged into shore power. If you want to run a 120-Volt appliance when you’re boondocking in the desert, you can harness the sun’s energy through solar panels —> charge controller —> batteries —> inverter, and voila! = 120-Volt electricity at your command! RV solar panels with inverter diagram Theoretically, you can power anything with the sun’s energy provided you have enough solar panels, batteries, and conversion ability! How To Know How Many Solar Panels You Need For Your RV Knowing how much solar power you need for your camping comfort involves figuring out a couple of pieces of information. These two parts of the equation help you determine how many solar panels you’ll need for the sun’s power to deliver the electricity you want. The two parts of this equation are: How many watt-hours will you use each day? (energy used) How much energy do your solar panels provide to your battery/batteries? (energy stored) You must balance all of this for an optimal system. Solar panels without enough batteries to store all of the power they produce will waste your money and not provide the power you need. Conversely, one solar panel and lots of batteries will not allow enough of the sun’s energy to be harnessed to fill those batteries for your use! Solar power energy balance diagram Figuring out this balancing act can take some work and requires an entire article of its own to explain, but we can distill down the basics here. Calculating How Much Energy You Use First, you need to know how much energy you use in a day. There are a couple of ways you can do this. The first involves math. Estimate how much power you’ll consume while boondocking in your RV by learning what each device or appliance you want to use consumes and multiplying that by the number of hours you’ll use that device or appliance. Here’s an example: You have one television that consumes 90 Watts. You estimate that you’ll watch television for approximately two hours per day. So 90W x 2h = 180 Watt/Hours per day You can do the same for every appliance or device you may want to power as you boondock, and you would add the total of Watt-hours consumed. From there, you can estimate how many panels you need. Calculating Energy Generation and Storage Needs A decent assumption is that a 100-Watt solar panel will generate on average 350 Watt-hours of power per day. However, this will vary significantly by location and time of year. This article by Mortons on the Move explains a way to get a more accurate result by using PVwatts. You’ll also need to know how many batteries you’ll need to store that amount of power! One 100 ah 12volt Battle Born battery has about 1200 Watt-hours storage capacity. Keep in mind that your solar panels will only give you the stated number of Watts under perfect conditions. Perfect conditions = direct sun pointing directly at the panel. On a rainy day, you won’t get 100 Watts from your 100-Watt solar panel. If you’re parking in the shade, you won’t get 200 Watts from your 200-Watt solar panel. It’s also challenging to estimate the amount of power you’ll use on a given day because days are different. You may be outside all day today enjoying nature, and fall into bed and watch 15 minutes of television tonight. Tomorrow could be a rainy day, and you’ll stay inside your RV, do a lot of work on your laptop, and watch a couple of hours of television in the evening. So estimating high is usually a good idea! Rather than estimating your daily power consumption using math, some people prefer to simply go out camping without electrical hookups and monitor their battery usage over a typical day. Installing a battery meter like the Victron BMV712 before installing solar can give you an accurate reading of how much power your RV needs. RV Solar System Components Before we take a look at how you install a solar system, let’s review the RV solar system components: Battery Bank Your battery bank is the heart of an RV’s power system. Without a battery, an RV has no way to store power. The battery is where energy provided by the sun is stored for your use. Your solar panels will charge the battery bank. But not all battery banks are created equal, and not all are suited to the unpredictable charge cycles of solar systems. Lithium batteries for solar applications are the superior choice over lead-acid. Read The Truth About Lead-Acid Vs. Lithium-ion Batteries to understand the differences. Two Battle Born batteries RV Solar Panels Your RV solar panels will sit on the roof of your RV collecting energy from the sun in the solar cells and transferring that energy (through a charge controller) to your battery bank. Your solar panels may lay flat, or you may choose to employ a mounting method that allows you to angle the solar panels toward the sun. RV solar panels installed Charge Controller The charge controller mounts inside the RV. Wires run from your solar panels to the charge controller and from the charge controller into your battery bank. The purpose of the charge controller is to control the rate at which your batteries charge. The charge controller is required to prevent overcharging and in the case of an MPPT charge controller, operate the panels as efficiently as possible. Solar charge controllers installed Inverter The electricity from your batteries is 12-Volt DC electricity. With this, you can power all 12-Volt devices and appliances as well as the 12-Volt (cigarette lighter) ports in your RV. If you want to use 120-Volt AC electricity to power a coffee maker, laptop, Instapot, or anything that requires AC, you’ll need an inverter that transforms 12V DC power to 120V AC power. You’ll mount your inverter inside your RV as close to your battery bank as possible, and your AC appliances and devices will receive the transformed (from DC to AC) power from that inverter. Battery installation The blue boxes are inverters installed in a custom built Van Electrical system Do You Need To Use RV-specific Solar Panels? No! Any type of solar panel can be made to work with an RV; however, there may be some challenges. First is space available. An RV roof may have lots of stuff on it and require the use of smaller panels. If the roof is wide open, full-size residential panels like used on homes can be used for RV solar panels. Residential solar panels installed on RV The second challenge with non-RV-specific panels is the voltage they operate at. Most RV solar panels are around 17-20 volts which will work with most PWM charge controllers to charge a 12-volt system. Home solar panels are usually 40-70 volts and cannot be used with PWM charge controllers. You can use MPPT style controllers as long as they have a high enough voltage rating. Using an MPPT controller allows the use of most of any solar panel for an RV. How To Hook Up Solar Panels to RV Batteries Now that we know how many solar panels you want to add to your RV let’s figure out how to connect them to your RV batteries to produce the electricity you need! Solar electric systems for RV’s vary enormously, especially if installing a larger system, make sure you are confident working with electrical wiring before taking this on. For systems up to a few hundred watts or kits, the voltages are not dangerous and can be installed by anyone. Regardless of the size, the following instructions are a high level of how the components should be wired. Let’s assume that you’ve purchased a kit containing the solar panel system parts, and you have a battery or battery bank installed in your RV. Your kit will contain: • A solar panel (or more than one, depending on what you’ve opted to buy). • A charge controller. • A wiring harness (and possibly connectors, adapters, and mounting brackets) • Installing RV solar panels • You may also want a battery monitor and an inverter (to turn that 12V DC power into 120V AC power). Steps for Connecting RV Solar Panels to Your RV Batteries Here are the steps to connecting your solar panels to your batteries: • Mount your solar panels on the roof of your RV. • Mount your charge controller inside the RV as close to your batteries as possible. • Run your wiring from the solar panels into the RV and over to the charge controller. • (You can run your wiring through a refrigerator vent or through the holes where the plumbing enters the RV if these are located near your batteries. If not, you can drill a hole through the roof of your RV to run your wires and thoroughly cover and caulk any drilled holes.) You should install a fuse or circuit breaker on the wires for this run. • Connect the wires from your charge controller to your battery bank. • A fuse slightly larger than the charge controller’s rated current should be installed on these wires. • At this point, the system is fully installed but the RV solar panels are not connected to the charge controller. Before making the final connection it’s important to double-check all wiring to make sure polarity (positive and negative) are all correct. Once confident you can plug in the solar panels to the charge controller. We recommend doing this at night or with the solar panels covered by a blanket to prevent a spark. • This step is optional, but if you want to use 120-Volt AC appliances, you’ll want to mount an inverter inside your RV, as close to the batteries as possible, and run appropriate wiring to that inverter. Installing RV solar Panels Note: If you are wiring your solar panels/controller directly to your battery bank, there is no need to disconnect the existing converter in your RV. Both the converter and the solar panels will be able to supply charge to the battery bank. Are RV Solar Panels Worth It? If you always camp at campgrounds and RV resorts where you will be paying for electrical hookups to power your RV and your various devices and appliances, then investing in a solar system may not be worthwhile. RV solar panels at beach If you want to camp in places like this without listening to your generator solar panels might be worth it! However, if you like to boondock – to stay in areas where there are no electrical hookups – beaches, city parks, state parks, the desert, a solar panel system is an excellent addition to your RV lifestyle. Solar panels provide silent power and can minimize the need for a noisy generator to recharge your batteries. Solar panels are a remarkable development in renewable energy! As an RVer, a solar panel system frees you! It allows you to go anywhere and stay anywhere, harnessing the incredible power of the sun to address all of your electrical needs. How does bypass diode on a solar panel work How to Bypass Diodes in Solar Panels Bypass Diodesare wired in parallel with individual solar cells or panels, to provide a current path around them in the event that a cell or panel becomes faulty or open-circuited. This use of bypass diodes allows a series (called a string) of connected cells or panels to continue supplying power at a reduced voltage rather than no power at all. Bypass diodes are connected in reverse bias between a solar cells (or panel) positive and negative output terminals and has no effect on its output. Ideally there would be one bypass diode for each solar cell, but this can be rather expensive so generally one diode is used per small group of series cells. A “solar panel” is constructed using individual solar cells, and solar cells are made from layers of silicon semiconductor materials. One layer of silicon is treated with a substance to create an excess of electrons. This becomes the negative or N-type layer. The other layer is treated to create a deficiency of electrons, and becomes the positive or P-type layer similar to transistors and diodes. When assembled together with conductors, this silicon arrangement becomes a light-sensitive PN-junction semiconductor. In fact photovoltaic solar cells or PV’s as they are more commonly called, are no more than big, flat photo sensitive diodes. Photovoltaic solar cells convert the photon light around the PN-junction directly into electricity without any moving or mechanical parts. PV cells produce energy from sunlight, not from heat. In fact, they are most efficient when they are cold! When exposed to sunlight (or other intense light source), the voltage produced by a single solar cell is about 0.58 volts DC, with the current flow (amps) being proportional to the light energy (photons). In most photovoltaic cells, the voltage is nearly constant, and the current is proportional to the size of the cell and the intensity of the light. The equivalent circuit of a PV, shown on the left, is that of a battery with a series internal resistance, RINTERNAL, similar to any other conventional battery. However, due to variations in internal resistance, the cell voltage and therefore available current will vary between photovoltaic cells of equivalent size and structure, connected to the same load, and under the same light source so this must be accounted for in the solar panel assemblies you buy. The silicon wafer of the photovoltaic solar cell that faces the sunlight consist of the electrical contacts and is coated with an anti-reflective coating that helps absorb the sunlight more efficiently. Electrical contacts provide the connection between the semiconductor material and the external electrical load, such as a light bulb or battery. When sunlight shines on a photovoltaic cell, photons of light strike the surface of the semiconductor material and liberate electrons from their atomic bonds. During manufacture certain doping chemicals are added to the semiconductors composition to help to establish a path for the freed electrons. These paths creates a flow of electrons forming an electrical current which starts to flow over the surface of the photovoltaic solar cell. Metallic strips are placed across the surface of a photovoltaic cell to collect the electrons which form the positive (+) connection of the cell. The back of the cell, the side away from the incoming sunlight consists of a layer of aluminium or molybdenum metal which forms the negative (–) connection to the cell. Then a photovoltaic solar cell has two electrical connections for conventional current flow, one positive, and one negative, as shown. Photovoltaic Solar Cell Construction When expossed to sunlight, photovoltaic (PV) solar cells produce DC power, the same as from a battery or cell. With no external circuit or load connected to its terminals, that is IO = 0, most photovoltaic solar cells produce a maximum “no-load” open circuit voltage ( VOUT ) of about 0.5 to 0.6 volts, much less than a standard 1.5V dry battery cell. But just like batteries, higher voltages can be obtained by connecting together a number of PV cells in series. When exposed to sunlight, a photovoltaic cell produces a current ( I ) proportional to the level of sunlight falling onto its surface. The maximum current a PV cell can produce, called its short-circuit current ISC, occurs when the cells terminals are shorted together, but under these maximum current conditions, its terminal voltage would be zero, VOUT = 0. Then a photovoltaic cell’s output voltage depends very much on the load current demands from ISC to IO. This means that a PV cell is essentially a low-voltage, high-current device. The current (and power) output of a photovoltaic cell is proportional the intensity of sunlight striking the surface of the cell. For example, cloudy or dull days reduce the effectiveness of a PV cell so the maximum current it could supply to a given load would be low, but the cell would still be able to provide the full output voltage. In order to increase the current requirements of the load, a brighter, larger amount of solar radiation would be needed to supply full power. However, there is a physical limit to the maximum current that a single photovoltaic solar cell can provide due to its size (surface area) no matter how intense or bright the suns radiation is. This is called the maximum deliverable current and is symbolised as IMAX The IMAX value of a single photovoltaic solar cell depends upon the size or surface area of the cell (especially the PN-junction), the amount of direct sunlight hitting the cell, its efficiency of converting this solar power into a current and of course the type of semiconductor material that the cell is manufactured from either silicon, gallium arsenide, cadmium sulphide or cadmium telluride etc. So when selecting blocking diodes or bypass diodes to connect to solar cells or panels, this maximum current value, IMAX needs to be taken into account. Diodes in Photovoltaic Arrays The PN-junction diode acts like solid state one way electrical valve that only allows electrical current to flow through themselves in one direction only. The advantage of this is that diodes can be used to block the flow of electric current from other parts of an electrical solar circuit. When used with a photovoltaic solar panel, these types of silicon diodes are generally referred to as Blocking Diodes. Bypass Diodes are used in parallel with either a single or a number of photovoltaic solar cells to prevent the current(s) flowing from good, well-exposed to sunlight solar cells overheating and burning out weaker or partially shaded solar cells by providing a current path around the bad cell. Blocking diodes are used differently than bypass diodes. Bypass diodes in solar panels are connected in “parallel” with a photovoltaic cell or panel to shunt the current around it, whereas blocking diodes are connected in “series” with the PV panels to prevent current flowing back into them. Blocking diodes are therefore different than bypass diodes although in most cases the diode is physically the same, but they are installed differently and serve a different purpose. Blocking diodes are different than bypass diodes, but in most cases the two diodes are physically the same. However they are installed differently and serves a different purpose. These blocking diodes, also called a series diode or isolation diode, ensure that the electrical current only flows in one direction “OUT” of the series array to the external load, controller or batteries. The reason for this is to prevent the current generated by the other parallel connected PV panels in the same array flowing back through a weaker (shaded) network and also to prevent the fully charged batteries from discharging or draining back through the array at night. So when multiple solar panels are connected in parallel, blocking diodes should be used in each parallel connected branch. Generally speaking, blocking diodes are used in PV arrays when there are two or more parallel branches or there is a possibility that some of the array will become partially shaded during the day as the sun moves across the sky. The size and type of blocking diode used depends upon the type of photovoltaic array. Two types of diodes are available as bypass diodes in solar panels and arrays: the PN-junction silicon diode and the Schottky barrier diode. Both are available with a wide range of current ratings. The Schottky barrier diode has a much lower forward voltage drop of about 0.4 volts as opposed to the PN diodes 0.7 volt drop for a silicon device. This lower voltage drop allows a savings of one full PV cell in each series branch of the solar array therefore, the array is more efficient since less power is dissipated in the blocking diode. Most manufacturers include both blocking diodes and bypass diodes in their solar panels simplifying the design. Bypass Diodes in Solar Panels Bypass Diodesare wired in parallel with individual solar cells or panels, to provide a current path around them in the event that a cell or panel becomes faulty or open-circuited. This use of bypass diodes allows a series (called a string) of connected cells or panels to continue supplying power at a reduced voltage rather than no power at all. Solar panel with bypass diode Bypass diodes are connected in reverse bias between a solar cells (or panel) positive and negative output terminals and has no effect on its output. Ideally there would be one bypass diode for each solar cell, but this can be rather expensive so generally one diode is used per small group of series cells. A “solar panel” is constructed using individual solar cells, and solar cells are made from layers of silicon semiconductor materials. One layer of silicon is treated with a substance to create an excess of electrons. This becomes the negative or N-type layer. The other layer is treated to create a deficiency of electrons, and becomes the positive or P-type layer similar to transistors and diodes. When assembled together with conductors, this silicon arrangement becomes a light-sensitive PN-junction semiconductor. In fact photovoltaic solar cells or PV’s as they are more commonly called, are no more than big, flat photo sensitive diodes. Photovoltaic solar cells convert the photon light around the PN-junction directly into electricity without any moving or mechanical parts. PV cells produce energy from sunlight, not from heat. In fact, they are most efficient when they are cold!. When exposed to sunlight (or other intense light source), the voltage produced by a single solar cell is about 0.58 volts DC, with the current flow (amps) being proportional to the light energy (photons). In most photovoltaic cells, the voltage is nearly constant, and the current is proportional to the size of the cell and the intensity of the light.
